awk and vim tips from Dicasl-L

Get first 4 characters:
$ echo “welcome” | awk ‘{ print substr( $0, 0, 4 ) }’
welc

Get last 4 characters:
$ echo “welcome” | awk ‘{ print substr( $0, length($0) – 3, length($0) ) }’ come

vim:
Joining all lines of a file into a single line:
:%s/\n/ /

or

ggVGJ
